Toxoplasmosis is an infectious disease caused by the Toxoplasma gondii microscopic parasite. Most people infected by this disease do not exhibit any particular symptoms although in some cases mild flu like symptoms such as fever, headaches and runny nose may appear. In most cases toxoplasmosis does not present a danger and goes away when antibodies are developed. However, pregnant women and persons with weak immune systems can face serious health issues in infected.
The infection is usually caused by the consumption of contaminated food or water or by handling an infected cat or contaminated cat litter. It can also be transmitted my mother to child at birth.
Toxoplasma testing is carried out to detect if there are antibodies present in a body’s system in response to the Toxoplasma gondii parasite. Two kinds of antibodies can be traced in a blood sample; IgM which are the first to be produced by an organism within two weeks of infection and IgG which are produced some weeks later to the infection and provide long term protection against the disease.
No presence of the antibodies during testing, usually, means that one has not been infected by the parasite and is not immune to it. In cases of no antibodies presence a second test might be performed some weeks later.
A blood sample is extracted from an arm vein for adults. For newborn babies sampling is usually done from the umbilical cord or the heel. No special preparation is required before blood sampling.
Method of test used
At Olympia Pavlidou Laboratory we use the toxoplasmosis serodiagnosis method to detect the IgM and IgG antibodies from a blood sample.
We carry out testing for toxoplasma in our state of the laboratory in Limassol. Results are available on the next day after sampling.
